New Trash Receptacles Installed:

When the new Main Street Kent organization looked for an initial high impact project for the downtown area, it wasn’t difficult to realize where it could make a genuine physical improvement to the downtown community — replacing our old, unsightly, dilapidated wooden trash containers.

In a timely effort, it was discovered that City officials and representatives from Main Street Kent were investigating the same problem, as the city also had a responsibility to solve the trash and litter dilemma. When the committee chose a company that supplied the receptacle needs of Kent State University, wishing to select a design that would offer continuity from the University to the downtown area, it found that the City had also examined the same stout steel bin in use throughout the KSU campus. The beautiful and durable wrought iron looks of the bin, manufactured by the Victor Stanley Co. of Maryland, became the unanimous choice of both Main Street and the city.

The Main Street Kent plan, in an effort to curb the current litter problem and promote awareness of civic responsibilities, has replaced the seventeen old wooden units with a total of fifty-five new units throughout the downtown area and the river edge walkway. The receptacles are mounted in a permanent manner to thwart vandalism.

The Burbick Foundation, a local supporter of a better Kent (and the Main Street Kent organization), underwrote initial funding to propel the plan forward (and reduce the cost of the bins). This coupled with a financial agreement with the City of Kent and the Main Street Kent organization sales plan, enabled the receptacles to be ordered.

Representatives from the organization are soliciting area corporate sponsorship, agency and service group cooperation, business support, and those individuals looking to help achieve the goal of a better downtown Kent. Single containers are being offered at $330.00 — will have reference to the Sponsor, the Burbick Foundation, City of Kent, and Main Street Kent elegantly displayed on the bin support band.
